Depo-Provera is a widely-used contraceptive injection containing medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Administered every 12 weeks, it prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining.

  1. Irregular Bleeding: Unlike combined birth control pills, Depo-Provera may cause irregular bleeding or no periods due to continuous hormone release. While bleeding is typically less, it can still be bothersome.
  2. Weight Gain: Some users report weight gain while on Depo-Provera, possibly due to hormonal changes and increased appetite.
  3. Bone Loss: Long-term use may increase the risk of bone loss, especially in younger women. However, this is reversible upon discontinuation.
  4. Delayed Fertility: Unlike some contraceptives, fertility may not return immediately after stopping Depo-Provera. Prolonged use can lead to months of infertility.
